London

A disheveled Lucien Damrill entered the sanctified environs of his library, a well-outfitted cave for the bear he’d become. As on every Thursday at that hour, he’d just finished a rousing session with Lady Amelie Foxworth, an insatiable beast of a woman whom he’d thrashed bloody, fucked insensible, and she still begged for more. A more jaded woman he’d never met, and he’d met every one London had to offer. All in all, the evening had left him tired and rather beastly.
With a compelling need for the burn of his favorite libation, he poured himself a generous measure of his finest French brandy.
A rustle of fabric drew his attention as he turned toward his desk. While never fearful, an emotion akin to disgust overtook him.
“How in bloody hell did you get in here?” He stepped closer to the red and gold striped Hepplewhite chair to see the intruder in a better light.prenticeanddesiree-200
“Why, dear, is that any way to speak to your dearly beloved wife?”
Lucien insides shriveled at the sound of her voice. “Wife you say.” He let loose a sarcastic strain of laughter. “Our marriage is simply an aberration.”
He held up the Sapphire Club’s signature snifter, the stem the figure of a nude woman. “You are no more my wife than is this glass.”
“I’m sure I’ve surprised you without an announcement of my arrival. Please do forgive my suspension of propriety. However, I am back, much learned, and quite anxious to make up for my neglect of you.”
Lucien affected a laugh as he recalled how his beloved wife had met him at the altar, stiffly consummated their union, and promptly hied herself off to the country. He’d never followed her, nor wished for her return. After ten years, he’d fairly forgotten the vows they’d exchanged, as he fervently hoped she had.
“Serenity dear, trust me when I say that I have not considered your absence a hardship, in the least. Quite the contrary. I have enjoyed a life unencumbered by a woman who, for all to see, deserted me the day after our wedding.” He pointed toward the door. “You can reverse your course, and take yourself away. I am fine without you and disappointed that you have subjected me to your company, even for so brief a time.”
Serenity sat firm. “I have not come all this way to simply leave you once again. Tell me you have found the years lonely without me.”
Lucien turned his back and drew deeply on his brandy. “Your concern for my loneliness is touching, but you really shouldn’t trouble yourself. Over the years, I have given you less thought than I give to strangers. But wait, we are strangers, are we not?”
Serenity straightened her spine as she lifted her quivering chin ever so slightly.thornhillsdilemma-200
“Have I struck a jot too close to home, my dear?”
As he studied the woman who carried his name, but hadn’t shared a moment of his life, he saw that she had indeed matured from a young, skittish maiden into a rather lovely woman. Her stylishly coiffed chestnut hair nicely framed the heart-shaped face he’d so admired. Her stays did a fair job of showing her breasts to their best advantage, while the creamy mounds tantalizingly overflowed her lacy, fashionably low-cut bodice. Under less contentious circumstances, Lucien might have taken the liberty of releasing them from their bonds and burying his face between them. Licentious thoughts aside, however, he held not a single pleasant thought concerning her, save for her long absence.
“What you might believe aside, Lucien, I have returned, well prepared to take my rightful place at your side, as your wife.”
He paced, sure that her icy blue gaze followed his every step. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that I am now wealthy, would it?”
Serenity worried her lace handkerchief. “What compels you to make such an unfounded accusation?”
Lucien wheeled around to face Serenity. “I am no naïve bumpkin, my dear Serenity. I want the truth, and I will have it, if I must thrash it out of you. Tell me why you have returned.”
Serenity stared into her lap. “I can understand your anger, but the matter is quite simple. I am here to make up for my shortcomings. I swear it. From things I’ve heard about you, I return to an intriguing, masterful man, who is more than prepared to handle me.”
Lucien laughed again. “Nothing about me ever intrigued you before.”
“Oh, pardon me, but you are wrong. Along with frightening me out of my wits with the necessities of consummation, you also fascinated me. My youth and ignorance of marital relations prompted my fear.”
“So you’re telling me that you shouldn’t have left, and that you were merely afraid of what would happen in our marriage bed, had you stayed?”
Serenity fidgeted, adjusting her traveling gown. “I accept your indictment of my behavior. However, in ten years, I have learned to appreciate, shall we say, the finer points of marriage. When I heard about the Sapphire Club and what you do here, I thought better of my prolonged absence. This is where I belong, at your side.”
“The club? You have come back because of the club? Serenity, I have owned this place for five years. Are you saying you have just heard of it? I must see to it my man of business does a better job of spreading the word.”
Deep suspicion pricked his common sense. The club was well known about London and surely all of England. Certainly, she’d heard of his enterprise before now.
“To be honest, I attended a house party in Yorkshire and overheard some gentlemen talking about you and the club. How could I not to take notice, when they spoke of my husband in such admiring terms?”
He raised a brow. “Exactly what did they say?”
The flush that colored Serenity’s cheeks pleased him immensely.
“The gentlemen said that you ‘blister arses and fuck ’em insensible.’ Please excuse the language, but that is an exact quote.”
